Look at the room, not just the trainer
Where you train shapes how you train. A crowded big-box gym in DTLA means waiting for racks, training around other members, and a coach whose attention is split. - How do you handle injuries or pain? The answer should involve modifying the program and, when needed, referring out — never pushing through sharp pain.
- What does a typical month look like? Listen for progressive overload and a planned deload, not the same circuit on repeat.
- What happens when my schedule blows up? A coach who has a plan for travel and missed weeks is a coach who keeps clients for years.
- Can I talk to a long-term client? Retention is the truest review. Trainers who keep people for years are happy to prove it.
Beware the two extremes on price
The cheapest option in Downtown LA is rarely the best value, and the most expensive is not automatically the most qualified. What you are actually buying is price-per-result over time, not price-per-session. A coach who keeps you training, progressing, and uninjured for three years is cheaper than three trainers you quit on in eighteen months.
